Welcome to the College of Science at Florida Tech!

The College of Science is evolving as a national-class teaching and research arm of the University in the sciences. Each department within the college has significant areas of strength and expertise in both teaching and research. For instance, Florida Tech was one of just two Florida institutions of higher learning listed in Peterson's Top Colleges for Science.

2012 NORTHROP GRUMMAN ENGINEERING & SCIENCE STUDENT DESIGN SHOWCASE

Friday, April 20, 2012

Since 2006, Florida Tech has hosted the annual Design & Research Showcase in the Clemente Center on a Friday in early April.  This Showcase includes dozens of posters and other project materials developed by undergraduate students, working on their own or in teams, from all academic departments in the College of Science (COS) and the College of Engineering (COE). Our students participate in these research projects to gain hands-on experience in applying science and the fundamental principles of their major. The students must conceive, research and/or design and implement the project. Additionally, they will prepare a final write up in a scientific journal format appropriate to their major, and present the final outcome of their work. The project simulates a real-world research and work environment in a variety of science fields. The students apply theory, think creatively and develop practical skills such as teamwork, professionalism and leadership.  Projects will be showcased in the Florida Tech Clemente Center for Sports & Recreation on Friday, April 20th, 2012. Show hours are from 11:00am - 4:00pm. The public is invited to attend.

LASER DAY 2012

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

LASER Day was designed for Brevard County High School (Grades 10, 11 & 12) and community college students as well as their guidance counselors, teachers and parents. This Fall event will be held on the Florida Tech Campus on Wednesday, November 14th, 2012 from 2:15 pm – 8:15 pm. This is a free event sponsored by the College of Science, College of Engineering and College of Psychology and Liberal Arts. We believe that the study of science, engineering and liberal arts is exciting and LASER Day is one way we can introduce you to this very excitement. Our program allows you the opportunity to choose three specific areas of interest to you, visit laboratories and attend presentations about chemistry, engineering, the space sciences, psychology, marine biology, media and music, to name a few. You will also have the opportunity to observe working research laboratories and discuss research projects with the faculty conducting them.

Online Registration is Available In Late September: http://411.fit.edu/laserday

APPLIED SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION

Sustainability is one of the most rapidly growing and relevant fields available in the 21st century.  Florida Tech is addressing these opportunities by offering new courses and a new Undergraduate Minor in Sustainability.  We unravel the complexity and learn real-world applications in your areas of interest.

Undergraduate Minor in Sustainability
Florida Tech’s Minor in Sustainability is available to undergraduates from any College - Science, Engineering, Business, Aviation, and Psychology/Liberal Arts.  The minor consists of 6 cross-disciplinary courses (2 required, 4 elective) that must total 18 credits.  With planning, many students can easily fit the courses into their curriculum. The 2 required courses are:

•  Introduction to Sustainability (ISC 1500, 3 credits)   This is the gateway course for students in the Sustainability Minor and provides historical and real-time analyses of sustainability.  Students from any college who are not in the minor can also take the course.  Sustainable practices are examined among many disciplines following the course syllabus.  Click here for a clip on how to register,  Instructor: Dr. K. Lindeman.

•  Applied Sustainability (ISC 4000, 3 credits)   Taken during junior or senior year, students will synthesize and apply what they have learned in ISC 1500, eligible electives (see below), and ISC 4000 classwork to create sustainability projects in their areas of interest.  Projects can be done individually or in small teams on- or off-campus.

Electives for the Sustainability Minor (12 credits)   For the remaining 4 electives to fulfill minor requirements, students must take 1 course within each of these 4 topic areas:  Environmental Sciences,  Business,  Technology, and Social Sciences/Humanities.  Over 80 eligible courses exist among these 4 topic areas and can be viewed here:  Sustainability Electives.    For many students, 1 or 2 eligible electives from the 4 topic areas are courses they take anyway within their major.  With planning, the 2 required and 4 topic area elective courses often fit easily into a curriculum.
