The
Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Tech is composed of
a diverse
and interactive group of scientists and students whose work
spans the entire breadth of biology. Our faculty currently
stands at 19 and the student body includes 60 master's
and Ph.D. students and approximately 300 undergraduate
majors. The expertise of our faculty ranges from conservation
biology and paleoecology to control and regulation of plasmid
and chromosome replication in E. coli; from plant molecular
biology to mechanisms
of infrared detection in snakes; from dynamics of larval and
juvenile Tarpon to investigations of calcium release at fertilization
to the role of chemical cues in habitat selection. While many
other research universities contain specialized and isolated
departments based on biological subdisciplines, we have assembled
a spectrum of experts who excel within specialized areas, yet
are committed to an interdisciplinary approach to the study
of biology.
The
biology department is housed in the F.W. Olin
Life Sciences Building (LSB). LSB contains eight teaching labs,
12 modern research labs, a
16-workstation computer facility, and an electron microscopy
suite. The building also includes animal care facilities for
housing small mammals and reptiles and a temperature-controlled
800 sq. ft greenhouse. The department has excellent teaching
facilities with a state-of-the-art multimedia auditorium and
classroom. All research and teaching space is fully connected
to the campus-wide high-speed network. The department also maintains
an on-campus Aquaculture
Center and the Vero
Beach Marine Laboratory where field studies in aquaculture
and marine biology can be performed.
