Thank you for visiting the Web site of the Department of Biological Sciences at the Florida Institute of Technology. Whether you are a prospective undergraduate or graduate student, alumnus or just a friend, I hope you will find our site informative and interesting.
Florida Tech was barely 13 years old when the department had its beginnings in 1971. Over the past 35 years the department has matured into a major unit of the university, playing prominent roles in research, education and service to the institution.
The mandate of the Department of Biology is to provide the essential requirements for a graduate or undergraduate education in biology, preparing graduates to enter professional programs, graduate programs, or employment in the public or private sectors as professional biologists. The mandate also includes development of excellent research programs and provision of graduate training and education.
Our undergraduate program combines a rich tradition of excellence with modern and multidisciplinary coverage of the major areas of biology including aquaculture, biochemistry, ecology, marine biology, molecular biology and preprofessional (premedical) biology as areas of specialization. The broad scope of our program provides students with unique opportunities to specialize in areas best suited for their background and research interests. The undergraduate program in marine biology is ranked seventh in the nation by the Gourman Report.
For those of you interested in pursuing graduate education at Florida Tech, you would embark on an exciting and challenging intellectual adventure that will change your life and, hopefully, how you view the world. Our excellence and commitment to research and teaching will provide you with a stimulating learning environment and prepare you for a career in academia, industry and/or government service.
If you are a potential graduate or undergraduate student who would like to learn more about us, we would be delighted to hear from you. We urge you to visit and see the facilities and feel the enthusiasm for yourself.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, or any of our faculty, if you have any questions.
