| Chemistry Graduate Degree
A major focus of Florida Tech's research expansion is the growing Chemistry Department. The department offers programs leading to master's and doctoral degrees in chemistry. Its faculty has recently grown to thirteen members and further expansion is planned in the near future. Two senior faculty are of particular distinction: Professor Gordon Nelson, Dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts, served as president of the American Chemical Society in 1988; and Professor Joshua Rokach, director of the Claude Pepper Institute for Aging and Therapeutic Research, is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical chemists. He was previously research director for Merck Frosst Canada. In addition, Dr. Mary Sohn served as chair of the geochemistry division of the American Chemical Society and Dr. Michael Babich has recently been elected to the board of governors for the Council for Chemical Research. The faculty is a young, active group dedicated to research and the training of students. Visit the faculty members' web pages to learn about their research interests. Current faculty members have been highly successful in obtaining external research grants and contracts, and have published more than 130 research papers, review articles and books during the past five years. The department's moderate size lets the faculty provide research students with a level of individual guidance that is not often available in larger programs. We believe this contributes significantly to the fact that our students have been consistently successful after graduation. The department is accredited by the American Chemical Society and is a member of the Council for Chemical Research.
