Summer Programs for Students and Teachers

Physics and Chemistry of Astrobiology

Summer 2012, we will be putting on a workshop for local high school teachers on the physics and chemistry of astrobiology. Further information, including application dates, will be posted soon. For more information in the meantime, contact Dr. Niescja Turner.

SARA NSF-REU Summer Intern Program

The Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) hosts a NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program each summer.  Interns work one-on-one with a faculty member at one of the SARA member universities, and as part of the experience, travel to Kitt Peak National Observatory outside Tucson, AZ, for a 4-night observing run on the SARA 0.9-m telescope.  We host 10 interns per year.  For more information, click here.

Quarknet

QuarkNet is an educational program sponsored by the National Science Foundation whose aim is to support science education in schools by establishing a nation-wide science teacher network. It provides opportunities for school science teachers to learn firsthand about frontline physics research in universities, and establish mentor relationships between science teachers and physics professors at universities.   Florida Tech is a QuarkNet center which has held several annual workshops. If interested please contact Dr. Laszlo Baksay or call the department office at (321) 674-8098.  For more information, click here.
